Waiting for the Sound of Thunder. A classic Nor'easter is blowing in today and we're hunkering down to ride it out. This could be the worst storm in years according to some reports. The rain has turned to snow for now and I feel the damp cold in my knees and long-ago broken bones. Serious flooding is expected across the state, particularly along coast and in low-lying inland regions, and we could see up to a foot of snow in addition to all of the rain. The Androscoggin River flows 200 feet from the edge of our backyard, but we are in no danger of flooding as our property slopes down to the river. Our house sits high enough for the rising waters not to be an issue. At least, I truly hope so. But things are going to get nasty and stay that way through Tuesday morning. I have tomorrow off as my office is closed for the Patriot's Day holiday (in honor of the start of the American Revolution in Mass. Go Paul Revere!), but Brian does not. If the power stays on, I plan on staying in bed all day and watching movies. I am ready for warm days and open windows, dinners on our sun porch and cold drinks on the front porch. I want to stick my hands in the cool earth and plant things; I want to ride the ferry through Casco Bay and watch lobstermen pull up their traps; I want to breath the warm night air and count the stars at the homestead. I want. |
